I went out to our warehouse to see if all of our Taylor Made Marine Gas Strut for Boat Hatches # 3691837 were compressed like you mention yours is, and they are not. My thoughts are you may have a faulty strut, these struts should be extended and require 40lbs of force to compress.
In some cases you may be able to twist the shaft of strut counter clockwise and that may release the strut if it is stuck closed. view full answer...

I may have a solution for you, but the Replacement Lid Support for Yakima Cargo Boxes # 8880683 will not work to replace the gas strut on your old Yakima Rocketbox.
